A heap of Plant Hunters, just waiting to be signed
After graduating with First Class Honours in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford, Thomas Mogford got his first job at ITV, continuing to pursue a love of languages by travelling to Japan and Germany to cover the FIFA World Cups. Then, after switching career to study Law as a postgraduate at City University, London, he embarked on a series of legal thrillers set in Gibraltar and the wider Mediterranean.
Thomas’s first Spike Sanguinetti book, Shadow of the Rock, was shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association ‘Dagger’ for Best Debut Novel, while the most recent, A Thousand Cuts, was hailed by the Sunday Times as ‘a thoroughly satisfying crime novel.’ Writing in the Sunday Express, critic Jake Kerridge referred to the Spike Sanguinetti mysteries as ‘one of the most enjoyable crime series of recent years.’

Thomas also writes historical fiction under the name T.L. Mogford. The Plant Hunter was published in 2022, and was shortlisted for the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize. His new historical novel, The Saffron Thief, will be published in July 2026, with the sequel due to follow a year later.
Thomas Mogford’s journalism has featured in the Guardian, the Daily Express, Reader’s Digest, Time Out and EasyJet Traveller Magazine. His short fiction has been published in Litro, The Field and Notes from the Underground, and been longlisted for the Bristol Short Story Prize.
