American correspondence…

There’s something reassuringly old-fashioned about receiving a reader’s letter forwarded by your publisher. And when that letter comes from the USA, it adds an extra spritz of excitement. So it was with much anticipation that I opened this envelope (below), then read of a man who’d purchased 4 of the 5 Spike books in their original American hardback editions, having stumbled across them quite by chance at a ‘yard sale’. The man had enjoyed reading them so much that he wanted me to sign his copies so that he could treasure them all the more. Alas, the cost of sending the books to England and back was prohibitive, so he’d kindly included 7 sticky labels for me to sign (3 as spares), as well as a pre-addressed envelope for me to send them back over the pond. How touching, I thought as I set about signing the labels at the kitchen table. My wife passed behind me, then leant over my shoulder to read the letter. Her response: ‘EBay…’
